Qwen-Image-2.1-Turbo — Qwen's image model now draws and edits in 8 steps

Qwen-Image-2.1-Turbo is an accelerated checkpoint of Alibaba's 7B Qwen-Image-2.1. It generates and edits images in 8 denoising steps with CFG=1. Weights are on Hugging Face under the research-only Qwen license, with Pro and Turbo APIs live.

The fast version of Qwen-Image-2.1: the same 7B image generator and editor, cut to 8 denoising steps.

What is it?

Qwen-Image-2.1-Turbo is a faster checkpoint of Qwen-Image-2.1, the 7B image model Qwen released on 20 September. One model still covers text-to-image, single-image edits, multi-reference composition and transparent RGBA output. The same day, Qwen made Qwen-Image-2.1 Pro and Turbo available as APIs on Alibaba Cloud Model Studio.

How does it work?

The speed comes from the step count: Turbo runs 8 denoising steps with CFG=1 by default, while the base model's quickstart uses 40. It also reuses text and reference-image context across steps with prefix KV caching. The checkpoint carries its own 8-step schedule, so changing `num_inference_steps` alone does not override it, and Qwen says other schedules are not evaluated.

Why does it matter?

Fewer steps means faster and cheaper images on your own GPU, which matters most for editing loops where you try many variants. The catch from the base model stays: the weights are under the Qwen Research License, so commercial products need separate terms or the hosted API.
