Codex CLI 0.161.0 — GPT-6.1 Sol becomes the default model

Codex CLI switches its default model to GPT-6.1 Sol and signs in to MCP servers from the terminal.

What is it?

GPT-6.1 Sol is now the default model in Codex CLI 0.161.0's bundled and Amazon Bedrock catalogs. The release adds /mcp login <name> to sign in to MCP servers from an active terminal session, and voice conversations can now choose a microphone, speaker and input channels.

How does it work?

On Amazon Bedrock, compatible models gain multi-agent V2 and Ultra reasoning, and Bedrock Mantle accepts AWS GovCloud regions. A Cyber access program can be selected per turn with codex exec --cyber-access-program or the TypeScript SDK option, and Daybreak becomes opt-in behind a feature flag.

Why does it matter?

Approved filesystem escalation can now grant wider write access while keeping denied reads and network limits, and background tasks keep the permissions of the turn that started them. Thread resume includes the latest history, and startup detects recoverable SQLite corruption earlier and keeps the damaged database as a backup.
