Codex CLI 0.160.0 — projectless sessions and Guardian review context

Codex CLI 0.160.0 lets sessions start outside a project with workspace defaults, adds opt-in Guardian review context from earlier instructions and agent handoffs, and fixes duplicate sends after reconnects.

Codex CLI can now start without a project and gives its Guardian reviewer more context.

What is it?

Projectless sessions arrive in Codex CLI 0.160.0, released by OpenAI on 1 October 2026: when policy permits, you can start a session outside a project with workspace defaults, and resumed sessions restore their saved permissions. The agent command center also gains a keyboard-accessible "Show more" action for browsing older tasks.

How does it work?

An opt-in Guardian review capability can now retrieve earlier user instructions and include context from agent handoffs. On Linux X11 terminals, fullscreen mode supports selecting transcript text and pasting with middle-click. Under the hood, queued messages resume after a reconnect only once uncertain submissions are resolved, and SQLite setup no longer stalls or hides errors as timeouts.

Why does it matter?

The reconnect fix stops Codex from sending the same message twice on a flaky connection, and subagents now keep environments that are still starting instead of losing them. Windows users get fixes for sandbox PowerShell fallbacks, long-path permission repairs and stray console windows from background helpers.
