DeepSeek Harness Desktop — the open agent harness becomes a Mac and Windows app

DeepSeek Harness Desktop is a developer-preview app for macOS and Windows that runs DeepSeek's MIT-licensed agent harness without a terminal. It bundles its own Node.js, Python and pnpm, and keeps tasks running in the background.

What is it?

DeepSeek Harness Desktop is a native app for macOS and Windows that packages DeepSeek Harness (dsh), DeepSeek's open-source agent runner where models, tools, skills and the interface are all plugins. Agents in the app can organise documents, analyse spreadsheets, write and test code, research and run background jobs. DeepSeek calls it a developer preview.

How does it work?

The desktop shell is an Electron app that reuses the harness's existing Web UI and runs a private Node-based host process in the background. It ships bundled Python, Node.js and pnpm runtimes, Office skills for DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files, a plugin manager that can install offline, and signed automatic updates. On Windows, closing the window leaves tasks running from the system tray.

Why does it matter?

Until now, running DeepSeek's harness meant installing Node.js and launching it from a terminal, which kept out people who are not developers. A one-click installer puts an MIT-licensed, plugin-based agent workspace in front of office users, and it can also drive other providers' models through your own API key.

Who is it for?

developers and office users who want a local agent workspace

Frequently asked questions

Which computers can run DeepSeek Harness Desktop?
DeepSeek Harness Desktop ships for Windows (x64) and for Macs with Apple silicon running macOS 13 or later, according to DeepSeek's download page. The desktop app's README says Linux is not supported for desktop releases, so Linux users still run DeepSeek Harness from the command line with npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web.
Do I need Node.js installed to use DeepSeek Harness Desktop?
No. The DeepSeek Harness Desktop app bundles its own Python, Node.js and pnpm runtimes, and the 0.2.0-rc.2 release lets Mac and Windows users install and manage the dsh terminal command from the menu bar without a separate Node or pnpm install. The command-line route without the app still needs Node.js.
Can DeepSeek Harness Desktop use models other than DeepSeek's?
Yes. DeepSeek describes two modes for DeepSeek Harness Desktop: official DeepSeek models, which need a DeepSeek account and for which DeepSeek collects session logs, and custom models that you configure with your own API key, where inputs go straight to that provider under its own data policy.
Is DeepSeek Harness Desktop safe to run on my files?
DeepSeek Harness Desktop is a developer preview, and the project's safety notes warn that the software has not had a security audit and that mistakes, malicious input or untrusted plugins can damage files or leak data. Running it in a test workspace and installing only trusted plugins is the cautious approach.
